Social Media: A Blessing and a Curse
In today's digital world, social media is like that friend who shows up uninvited to every hangout. Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it’s helpful, but sometimes it just gets in the way. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter make it ridiculously easy to stay in touch, but they can also trick us into thinking we’re closer to people than we actually are. Instead of fostering deep, meaningful friendships, social media can sometimes create superficial connections that lack the intimacy of face-to-face interactions. We're living in a time when a 'like' may replace a heartfelt conversation.
How Social Media Messes with Friendships
It shows only the "best moments" of friendships. We see polished versions of people’s lives, not the messy, real parts that make friendships stronger.
It can make us feel left out. Seeing friends hang out without us can sting. Even with a good reason, it can create distance.
It leads to surface-level chats. Emojis and quick comments are easy, but they don’t replace real, honest talks.
It blurs the line between “friends” and “followers.” Just because you know someone online doesn’t mean you truly know them anymore.
How to Keep Real Friendships Strong
The good news: social media does not have to ruin real friendships. You can protect the friendships that matter. Here are some ways to protect the friendships that matter most:
Reach out directly. Instead of replying to a post, send a text or make a call. Ask how they’re really doing.
Prioritize face-to-face time. Meet for coffee, walks, or movie nights. Anything where you’re actually present together goes a long way.
Be open about your feelings. Share more than the polished version of your life. Let your close friends see the struggles, not just the successes.
Set boundaries with scrolling. Limit the time you spend comparing your life to everyone else’s highlight reel. It gives you more energy for the friendships that actually matter.
Celebrate in real life. Sure, post a comment on their birthday picture—but also send them a card, give them a call, or surprise them with their favorite snack.
Keeping Real Friendships Alive
Remember, at the end of the day, social media is just a tool. It can help you stay connected, but it shouldn’t be the only way you connect. Set regular times to check your accounts, so you can have more in-person time with others. The friendships that last are the ones where you put in real effort, even when it’s not as quick or convenient as hitting “like.”
